Partnering with Parents
When parents need somewhere to turn they can call our crisis line, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On the other end of the crisis line, they find a supportive person who listens, assesses their safety, and connects them to resources to address their crisis. Many times, we arrange transportation to bring the family to our agency so we can discuss the situation, provide support, review their basic needs (such as safety, shelter, income, food, clothing, and access to medical care), and place their children at the Nursery for up to 72 hours. Parents placing their children at the Nursery must reside in Hennepin County.
When placing their child at the Nursery, parents first meet with a Family Advocate for on-site support where together they set goals and develop an action plan to address their crisis during their child’s stay at the Nursery.
When a parent picks their child up from the Nursery, they will again meet with a Family Advocate to discuss their progress and access additional social services that will help stabilize their family. They also discuss their child’s development and the goals their child worked towards while staying at the Nursery. Parents receive tools to continue working on these goals with their child once they leave the Nursery.
